I am beginning to place a puzzle together and would greatly appreciate guidance.

Where do I begin?
I shall do short bullet points to save time:
*Nov. 2006 I was searching for my spirit guides. Had a little fear to know and was in a drumming circle with some shamen and shawomen.
There was a shooting star and I saw a Native American man wrapped in a pelt in my mind's eye. I believe it was a wolf or coyote pelt. Would a Native American wear either?
That night:
Got a call to come home. My young son was very sick. As I rushed home, a coyote stepped out in front of my car. It was as if the car went into slow motion without me even doing anything. The coyote and I met eyes and then as if I did telepathically, I told him to run the other way to be safe.
I got home to my son. Felt as if maybe I had met my totem animal. Read Coyote means family and trickster. The family part sounded right. Didn't know the trickster part.

* Fast forward to this summer. I walked into a situation where I needed a plumber to come to my house. Turns out his car belonged to a friend who was missing. I leaned over to touch the car and got impressions that I shared with the police. That night, our house was filled with some strange energy. In meditation, I saw the Native American come to me, shake his head then push the negative energy away.

*Oct. 22, 2009, Coyote ran across my path.
*Oct. 23 The start ot a very long week finding out a spiritual mentor and friend turned out to be someone who was leading me in the wrong direction.

I can't help but think that Coyote and the Native American who I have seen wrapped in the pelt are the same.

Is there someone who has had the a similar experience or can shed light on this? I do appreciate it.

thank you

I hope this made some sense. So I do believe that coyote is my totem animal but I also think he is in connection with the Native American who has come to me those few times in the form of perhaps a protector? A gatekeeper? Is there a term best used in the Native American culture?

You've answered your own question......and who better to practice shapeshifting than the trickster.....I'd say you've met one of your guides/totems and it is a good one to have....

You have given me even more to think about. Thank you. I have heard of the term shapeshifting. That makes total sense! Still more to learn for me.

What you see, is what you want to see
Sharp shifting is a way of moving your perception
You expected you guide to have two legs
Then h/shee shifts to four legs
Ask yourself about you guide
Why could he/she not be both
The man/woman could also be the Coyote
The man/woman could also be the trickster

I am man, I am also cunning, the fool and a trickster
And that's me, not you guide
We all work on many levels
Why not a guide, do not believe that they work on one level
You will have to work on many level's
Just to work out the massages from your guide
There minds are not much different from ours

You could start with believing that your minds are the same
What you would do, so would your guide
And there will be misunderstandings
Until you find a level that you can both work on

Now I need to know why
I had to come back to the above post
And put in the last paragraph to help you along
To help you understanding
Is your guide working me
Or is my guide helping you

Now you should understand
It will not be plain sailing
For every answer that you get
So many more questions will come to mind

Ah Lynn, I will have to do some deep thinking about you to respond really well.  Hermit has said much of what I am thinking.  To address your points:
1.  There was a shooting star and I saw a Native American man wrapped in a pelt in my mind's eye. I believe it was a wolf or coyote pelt. Would a Native American wear either?
Yes, the people utilized furs but coyote was revered, he was the trickster sure BUT he was usually the one to teach lessons so a seer or medicine person or one of great sight would have owned such a powerful pelt.  Also remember Native Americans did not have "shamans" that is a word brought over and applied to what they do/did because it is very "shamanlike".

2.  I got home to my son. Felt as if maybe I had met my totem animal. Read Coyote means family and trickster. The family part sounded right. Didn't know the trickster part.  [/img]the word trickster immediately brings to mind mischief and negativity but it is not always so.  Coyote was given a huge job by Spirit because he was so "frisky" shall we say.  I will find you some of the old stories, they may help put him into perspective...and of course you would've spoken to him as opposed to hitting him with your car.  And I feel he stepped out to slow you down because you were going to fast?[/i]

3.  Oct 23rd and the betrayal.  This I understand and you know how I feel.  Many of us have experienced a false human guide/friend.  You have our care and support.

4.  I can't help but think that Coyote and the Native American who I have seen wrapped in the pelt are the same.   as hermit has said, why not?  In the other worlds beyond our touch and reality many things are possible.  Are they one in the same?  Shapeshifters did exist, and do sometimes cross the thresholds for important times.  You were being tricked by another human, a lesson learnt..albeit a very hard one.  was the other person coyote?  no, just  a misguided one who actually taught you well in some ways tho hurt in others.  What does your gut tell you?  Usually that combined with your own ability tell you...it is the right or wrong path.

5.  I will agree Coyote has come to you at a time in life you needed him.  Usually it is a time of learning and awakening when he comes.  Is he your totem animal?  Not sure about that but he may well be "one of them".  A guardian, yes.
I have one, he comes round and speaks when my ears are closed.  Now this is why I think you need be open.  You are the wounded deer.  In life the coyote would hunt and have you BUT you have gained strength and support from the "herd" so to speak.  Totems are special things.  They can change day to day or never.  One's personal main totem animal is one you see so often it is like the sunlight and shadow.  Is coyote there?  Maybe so only you can say but mind now that you heal with new eyes and ears...for another I feel..could be tiny as an ant or huge as a bear, delicate as a butterfly or strong as the buffalo.

Do a cutting ceremony, let the negativity and uncertainty fly away in the smoke and begin again.  All is well.  One need not be "Indian" to walk the Red Road.  One needs not "walk the Red Road" to appreciate and treasure totems and spirit guides.   They are universal...walk as you, regain your self trust and power again.

COYOTE

Trickster, Shape-Changer, keep me from danger.
Cunning magician, teach me your ways
Of magical fire, powers much higher.
Lead me to new life.  Brighten my days.

Wisdom, Folly

The Coyote teaches you how wisdom and folly
go hand-in-hand.
In the folly of others, we see our own foolishness
and we learn from their mistakes.

If a Coyote totem has appeared in your life,
be prepared for "Murphy's Law" to enter your life with a vengeance.
Your sense of humor will arise full force in keeping with the things happening around you.
Blind dates, things that suddenly don't work, all this is Coyote humor.
You need to learn to laugh at yourself and Life's irony.

Coyote energy is tied to simplicity and trust.
It stimulates and renews innocence and reawakens a childlike wisdom in the world.
A Coyote's howl touches your soul, reminding us of our primal connections.

Coyote people are very adaptive to new situations
and have close-knit families, especially when children are involved.

Thank you for helping me. I am humbled by what I have learned. There is a lot ahead of me in this journey I think. All the possibilities, I am feeling like a child ready to learn.
Thank you and bless.
