suggestions?I mentioned that we had to have one of our rats put to sleep.
His partener was Hiro.
Hiro is a friendly, gentle rat, but nervous, even more so since Jenson passed away.
We think that's why he fights with other rats, cos he is nervous.
He needs a cage friend tho. The friend who rat sat for us, put a little cuddly toy in his cage for him, it's not the same though.
Daughter was going to have him, mmm, castrated, but don't think that's the answer.
Any suggestions.
He is healthy, but not really happy.

what about if you put a rat in a cage next to him for a month or so till they get to know each other before moving in together

Hiro is in a cage next to Sam and Dean. Dean is the most docile rat born lol, yet Hiro huffs up and attacks the cage.
He has had the oppurtunity to be friends with other docile and not so docile rats many times.
He just won't accept them, it's like he makes the first move before the other does.
Even when Dean has surrendered he goes to attack.
We do not want to buy another cage and another rat only for that one to be lonely too.
Can't afford it either. The cages cost £80+ each. And we got two already, they are HUGE.
And vet bills are just as high for small animals as they are for the bigguns.

sounds like hell have make do with being in his own cage next to the others unless Sage gets some info out of him.

Grrrr..he does not wish to have his friend replaced. He is quite sure about that..he misses his friend alot and is a huge sigh...2nd time he says..no more he says. I'll do with the people he says he is not a rat he says. He is tired of the fuss he says, just leave the youngster ones to themselves he says.
Mia, I would leave him be. He is quite firm about not wishing to share his home with anyone else again. How would he be with a mirror or a framed pic of his friend? I know I am so weird, but I am serious!

That is fine Sage.
As long as he will be happy.
We know he is still mourning for Jenson.
Jenson was a lot older than Hiro, so are Sam and Dean, I also guessed Hiro was different (not a rat)
Amy is sorting out a pic of Jenson and we will try a mirror too, though rats are sposed to have very bad eyesight and rely on smell and sound.
We will try anything.

We had a girl rat who lost her friend, and she was the same.........absolutely wanted nothing to do with a new friend. She seemed to mourn her friend for a while and then became quite content being a loner.
She did like when the cat would lie on top of her cage and she could pull his tail  we were able to set her near a window in the dining room where she could be in the middle of the goings on and that seemed to keep her happy. She lived about 4 years longer (I think she was around 6 when she passed) as a single rat.
I think Hiro will adjust maybe some new toys to play with or a new cage location.

He needs EXTRA love right now......... He'll know what the mirror or picture of his old friend is all about and will appreciate it. But the extra attention is what he needs most.  Poor fellow.

He would win Most Spoiled Rat in a show lol
After Sage told me his feelings, I went to Amy's lounge to tell her and he actually met me at the door of his cage.
He hasn't done that since Jenson went.
So we are happy about thet :)
