New word, new knowledge -- synesthetia

Whoa -- might have found out why, when I think I smell gas or something, I turn down the TV or music, so I can smell it better....been going on forever...I thot everyone did that.  Until someone asked "What are you doing?"

But now, thanks again to the Science Channel, I've learned a new word  - synesthesia -  that might explain it. So, I googled that word this morining.

Seems that smell/sound can be related for a person. Or letters/colors and more. Also discussed on some sites is psychic ability related to this stuff.

So, I'm a somewhat intelligent ambidexterous woman.... some of the sites say that is the largest group with this. Puts me right in there. Gees. Learn something every day.  Here's one of the sites I found. There are LOTS on a word I never heard before in my little world.

Again, food for thot.  --TT   q25

Many synesthetes are individuals of high intelligence. They often have excellent memories. There are more women synesthetes than men. A high proportion are left handed or ambidextrous. Some have trouble telling left from right and have a poor sense of direction. Others experience minor difficulties with mathematics.

Very interesting site TT.  It explained a lot for me.

I sometimes see color and patterns while listening to music.  The kid's dad was a musician and I remember on particular piece that while he played it, I saw a magenta and golden pattern that seemed to move with the music, another time I was trying to explain which animal I was talking about while watching a tv show many years ago.  I kept telling her no, not that one it's the brown one with the with stripes I was seeing.  My mother was puzzled as it was a black and white tv.  q25  Certain tastes and smells have shapes, rather than colors, for me though.

I don't know about the rest but I have an extremely poor sense of left and right, direction and math.  My question for my math professors was always, why?  They only knew how to answer how to do it not why, so I never made the connections. Nor can I do speak while thinking or doing anything spacially.  I can only make unitelligible sounds when asked a question while in that mode and it takes me a while after to make the transition from the creative mind to the logical or analytical afterwards.

Oh yeah -- math! Algebra was the only subject I ever got a just about failing grade in -- a D Minus!   It made no sense to me whatsoever & I couldn't see how it would ever be used.Guess what? Never was in my life! It was the worst....guess this sort of explains why.  I'm glad you found the site helpful. There's many many more on it. I just picked one to post.

so does that explain why when you are driving somewhere and you  discover you are lost you have to turn the tunes down? q5
Sage/Debs

Oh my yes!!! q15  I have the worst sense of diection and I'm always hearing in colors and feeling in colors and always prefer the quiet so I can see better.  I thot I was just weird!  I smell my dad or another and I must turn things down to smell/feel them better also!  Great link TT.

I do the exact same thing!
Haywire

I was born dominant left handed. When I was 8 years old and started learning cursive writing I personally switched to using my right hand. What ever I learned to do left handed I still do but the things I learned to do after 8 years old I do right handed. I believe this was a turning point in my life as far as my thought processes are concerned. I believe I had what they call a "Brain Imbalance" which caused me fear, depression, loneliness, etc. at such a young age. When I switched hands I became a different child. I still felt my soul but I felt different about the way I approached situations. I became more aware of my surroundings and felt out of place in the world.

I have always been terrible in math, yet I do have a degree in computer science.  Was able let the computer do the Math so to speak.  I never could put the day to day living with the formulas, never.  I figured my professors could not understand my questions...

When I smell things I think of color.  If I smell rose I always think red.

Love to You

So, do you think this too is synesthesia?

Since I've been alive, my mental picture of the calendar does not resemble what everyone seems to recognize as a calendar. I don't see it as something you flip pages on to go from one month to another.  to me, the calendar is in my head.

It is round, with the end of December hitting at what would be 12 on a clock. then there's January, ending at what would be 1 on a clock. And so on, until you get to the end of July, which is at 6 on a clock. Then eventually back around to Dec. 31, which is one second before the new year, at 12 again.

I thot everyone saw it this way, until I started asking around & nobody knew what I was talking about. I have always always seen counted days and months this way. Yeah, the regular type calendar is on my desk or whatever, but it's just so "flat."   My mental calendar is similar to a zodiac, but different in its own way.

Any thots on this? Any ideas on where I can go to find out more about this "strange" thing/thot pattern?  q25 Help appreciated.  -- TT

Gosh, this is really interesting!
I don't smell in colour, but I see colour in smells.
I also smell and think better in silence, or, with my eyes shut.
The rest doesn't apply to me.

TT, your calender is wonderful!
I love your mind xx
Witch Hazel

TT were you Inca?

Or maybe that calendar was from Atlantis or someplace? Did you invent where you were? A thinker.
Time Traveler

Mia ---  q13

Witch Hazel -- I don't know what you mean by inventing where I was? And no, I don't think I was Inca. I do have an interest in their culture, but no, I don't think I was there.  Actually, I'm interested in history of all cultures and times.

Do you have a theory in mind? I'm all ears. (well, that doesn't paint a very pretty mental image, does it?)  :q26:
Witch Hazel

I meant Mayan LOL.  q12   Their calendar is round.

But maybe yours was more round like the Moon.

My thoughts of where you might have picked up your vision of the shape of a calendar goes WAY back. Back to an earlier incarnation?

Some times I like to try to provoke thought :) I think aloud sometimes when I wonder something.

You're all ears? I'm nosy! Nice to meetcha!  q5
I got a giggle at you're not all ears! LOL!
Time Traveler

I have previously explored different descriptions of the Mayan calendar, thinking perhaps that might be it. I have also looked at a millions images of it, but nope, that's not it.  It's similar but the Zodiac circle is really more similar. But it's still different. I've done the same with that.

Once, I saw on TV, a mention of something that sounded so on target, but I was online at the same time it was on in the background. It was a 3-letter word and yeah, it was Mayan. But I lost the word & could never find it again. Anyone know? It's not the regular mayan calendar.

So, that's the reason I'm just coming out with this here. I thot, perhaps, someone here might have experienced this or heard of this mental calendar before.

I can't find it in books or online. There are so many things we think are just our own, until we bring it up & others say, hey, I do that too.   I'm guessing that's not the case this time. Oh well.......the months tick away.     q25
Time Traveler

Being possessed of late by this "calendar thing," I ferreted out another good, albeit more scientific site on synesthetia.

AND it tells about a women who sees the calendar as a ferris wheel and the months are ferris wheel cars!!!  That's the closest I've ever come to finding any description EVEN CLOSE to mine.  My eyes about bugged out of my head. It's definitely not the same as mine, but to even find something similar is astounding to me.

Anyway, here's the site, in case any of you who feel you may have some form of synesthetia are interested. Whew!

Oh TT, this is great..I have equated color to so many things in my life...just thot I was weird!  Honey tastes like red to me, pumpernickle bread like gold and more!

You know..you should post this with our friends on NLH...Oh Mia!!!!
mia

TT, may I send your words to some friends?
I am sure among them at least one will know your calender.
If not, you will not have lost anything.
I would not reveal your name or the source of your post.
Love mia xx
Time Traveler

Mia - Please feel free to do that. I would, however, love to know their responses. We can all learn together. As far as I can tell, that's what it's all about. I'm anxious to hear. -- TT

Sage - I just put it on NHL.  - TT

I got one answer for you'

"  …I think the three letter word she is refering to is…

          …Tun… "
Time Traveler

Sorry, Mia --- I have no idea what that means or where to go with it.
mia

You said a three letter word which is Mayan, that you cannot remember.
So Will replied with Tun.
I have googled it

http://www.google.co.uk/search?so...A_enGB234GB235&q=Tun%2c+mayan

See if it helps xxx
Time Traveler

Thanks, Mia. I went to that site & also, armed with the word "tun," went to several others. The round calendar is similiar to mine, but mine is quite plain & that is ornate. Also, the time markers (months?) don't agree in position, altho similar. It is very close, but different. Thanks for trying tho! I'll keep looking up Tun. q13

Also, new knowledge from my exploration. There's so much said abou the Mayan prediction of the end of time in 2012. I was at a site that said the Mayan prediction did not mean the end of life in 2012. It meant only, literally, the end of time, as in that would be the year when time became unnecessary. In 2012, it would be no longer necessary to keep track of time.

Now, that's different from the end of the world. Gees. Either way, I plan to be here in 2013, gods willing.
mia

Gosh yes, I knew that.
It's as you said the end of the world as we know it now.
But it'll be so gradual, we probably won't even notice it.

I'll c+p your answer over xx
Sage/Debs

Not the end of the world as we know it just a change I think.  Enlightened, aware, ready for the next part of the show.
could't resist  song popped to mind as I typed q5
