I'd like to introduce you to a special equine friend of mine

Gini, I call her Possom.  Ever see that movie "Something to Talk About"?  The gray horse Silver Bells that the little girl is in love with she called Possum and this lady reminds me of her.  Her owner contacted me to see if I could help...she has the dreaded "founder".  Now mind, I lost Treasure exactly the same way the same hoof and I was...scared BUT I got my surrogate and I centered and I worked and worked...she sits on my desk as do I for many hours and I can reach over and touch her all the time.  Her new mom has given me permission to share the story and I hope if you feel moved to send to this regal lady you just go ahead...she loves it and her mom has said it's ok.

Gini is 12 yrs old.

Long story short...the mare was sent to be bred to K's Stallion but arrived thin and lame.  Needless to say K did not breed the horse but stabled her and got the owner to agree to xrays and tests to find her foundered quite  badly, the one hoof almost thru the sole, 2 grams of bute a day helped her pain.  She wore 4" foam boots in a heavily bedded stall for a long time.  No hoof wall and hardly any sole in the one hoof.

Moving forward the owner decided they do not want the expense of this horse and give her to K!   q14   This is a wondrous good person who has put alot of time love and money into this gentle giant.  OH did I mention she is a huge 16+hand throughbred mare, former racer?  NO? Well she is such a sweet soul and she has my heart as well as K's.   She put on some weight, got some love and good care

Now just this week the vet and farrier have come, her xrays show her rotation is not as bad and she has a bit more sole, her hoof walls are delicate but we have hopes of more improvement.  She just got new glue on shoes with soft pads in this next pic so she can finally go out in a nice soft round pen and feel the sun for a few hours a day.  She eats well, and will have 2 older friends who are quite nice to share time with soon.  She is on 1 gram of bute now q22  and doing so well.

I did a Reiki session on Gini by phone with her mom listening and giving me input.  It was great but better than that was the email I got the next morning saying tho skeptical about all this, when she entered Gini's stall after, Gini just wrapped herself round K in a huge hug.

 Debbie,
I had my vet out today, and we had the long discussion.  The podiatry group (farrier/vet combo) also out, and we have much better and tougher soles on BOTH  feet!  He replaced her pads, and we are trying one more vet to get a veinogram (want that before we do the ortho shoes) on the farm…I don’t want to trailer her without these on, but we really cant get perfect angles unless we know what the veins are doing/capillaries, etc.  Her supplements will be in on Friday, and so we either get the veinogram or go ahead and put on initial ortho shoes (shoes is a loose term, but she’ll be able to go outside and walk comfortably with them, just no work …as if she would have to do any work!), then trailer her to do the veinogram.  They were amazed at the improvements in her feet!

She feels good, and she had actually pushed her old pads into nothingness, so they weren’t doing much!  Also, we work on her in her stall without even a halter on.  That amazes them too, as not something we see in the tb world!   We do still have an on again, off again pulse and inflammatory issue, but thus far no further damage.

She was funny, like “oh yeah, you’re here to look at my feet”…she just picked them up as they touched, and even stood (normally) on LF without the boot on…first time we’ve seen that, too.  This mare is an interesting soul…the x-rays look like she has been in this shape for several years, which also amaze us.  I’m in human medicine, and I’ve seen time and time again that attitude and mentality is at LEAST 65% of any disease or illness/ injury recovery/stabilization, and she is the equine proof of this fact as well.

She has been much more active.  I actually had to chase her around the stall to give her bute.

   Debbie,
Gin’s dong good, specialty vet from R and R out here yesterday, took more xrays, felt we had a bit more sole than we thought.  He is going to do the special glue on shoes tomorrow.  She’s really fairly comfortable.  He felt her prognosis much better (for pet, not breeding or riding).

She can go out into round pen now, and I am to call her report into
vet on Sat.  We hope, if she is still tolerating them well, we can
then let her go out with R and G...the grey mare special K group!!  If she tolerates that ok, we'll start weaning off Bute.  He changed her to senior feed, said to have her put on 100 pounds.  He suspects years  of stress, poor care/poor nutrition did this. New xrays showed we
actually have 5 mm sole between coffin bone.  Better view, etc, not
increase in sole this early.  We re-xray and reset shoes in 6 weeks.
Yeah!!

She’s actually doing well, vet allowing her out in round pen for 3-4 hours a day, and I am to call him tomorrow to report and hopefully up her time out and size of her paddock.  She is down to one gram of bute a day, and thus far we are fine.  She is allowed the all you care to eat timothy hay, senior feed, supplements.  She has and will have a slight limp on right, mainly due to the huge roll over on the shoe more than any pain level…to get angle right due to rotation of coffin bone, the right shoe is crazy looking and doesn’t match left.   Kind of like a person that wears one lift shoe to help with leg length discrepancy issues.  I have the perfect two mares for her to be with…R, the rescue mare (who is doing well, terribly attached to her buddy, G), and G my nicer tb racing broodmare, that is so very timid with others that she can’t be in a typical broodmare herd.  All three of these girls are the color of Gini or lighter…it will be cute.

If we can get hoof wall back and a bit more sole, then eventually she can wear more normal looking shoes, although I will stay with glue ons forever.  The running joke is that I am going to decorate her “shoes” with some stones/jewels and write the designer’s name on them!  HA

SO my friends if you stayed this long and read all about our darlin Gini (aka Possum to me) I thank you.  K thanks you and if you have a moment and the desire, your light and prayers are appreciated.   I have come to care deeply for this horse.
I couldn't save my Treasure but now I know more, have more ability and like to think the Reiki helps as will the pretty charms and stones I sent them also.  K asked me to send her the link to this so you may hear from her as well.  I admire this woman beyond measure for giving to a horse that wasn't hers but one look into those eyes and well I am sure you see it too.

Today's update

Gini was out in field last two days!  She’s trotting!  Very happy camper, down to one gram bute daily and so far no problems.  I watched her today and thanked the Lord I didn’t let them put her down.  Yes, she’s a pet I don’t need and probably shouldn’t afford/can’t afford, but glad I did it. K

We windge and whine about a life we have of our own choosing, the dread to be imprisoned by someone who doesnt want or care for you, to be at their mercy  q11

i shall never moan about work again, it is my choice to be here, if i dont like it - leave get another job go on the dole.

we do have choices we are just too busy grasping at our 'things' .

we dont have to wait for someone to set us free we have the power to do it ourselves.

Ah Sue...life is life and at times damn difficult so do not feel badly for venting about hard times...there is always another story that is harder or sadder but that does not lessen our pain at the moment... it is ours to be human.  This human has a heart and saved a good soul.  Blessed be those who think with their hearts...we will always be poor in $$ but rich in friends and care. q13
