I remember when I was little how Septembers would bring that snap to the air, when walking outside was a surprise being chilly so soon after the past winter.
She would say, how do we get ready?
We would watch the black squirrels rush about thru the trees testing the black walnuts for ripeness, the pears and apples..almost ready.
Come October we would be 6 little black squirrels rushing around gathering baskets full of the luchious nuts. I asked my gran were we taking from the squirrels tho? She would laugh and say Spirit provides enough for all his squirrels be they furred or human.
My father always said we should rake the leaves..to us it was great fun to make the piles and rush and jump and play within the soft earth smell of them. To hear the crackle of them like fire without flame, a delight.
We'd pick the apples and pears and put them in the cellar with those walnuts and Gran would make apple pies and pear preserves and all the while saying how we were all little squirrels.

Are you a squirrel? Can you think of the many things that need to be sorted out for the long winter ahead?
Can you try to remember to enjoy it like children of times long past?
Only we, as adults, forget the joy of making fun out of work and we need remember.

The joy of eating those foods, of waiting til winter to set in a circle each with a hammer to break open those walnuts and eat the sweet meat...I will never forget.
In my hollow it is hickory nuts my grandson and I will collect...

make a memory, remember one..but be a squirrel joyously preparing for the cold to come, be not the grumbly human...AHO
