Shirley or Sage  or both???  Help me make sure I have the dosage on carafate right.  The tablets I got from the vet are 1 gram.  The mare who lost her foal last is still grieving and I am afraid she has ulcers going now.  She will graze but she doesn't want her grain.   No temp or any other problem I can find.  she will eat a little hay but not much.  Now this gal was a little blimp when she came home in August.  Not now.  She has lost to much and I am getting worried. Here she is when she came home
Her name is Flirt.  Sage can you get anything from her??  Booboo??  Shirley??

Oh poor sweetie, 1 tab crushed in some applesauce or syrup 4 times a day, do this for 3 wks then cut one out go 3 times a day then 2 more weeks then twice a day, then a maintenence of once a day for a bit till you are sure she is healed.

She is a bit off and not too sure about the grieving, she understands about the loss...but I do feel that loss may well have formed the ulcer and now it hurts her again....can you get us a new pic please?  Is she alone or with the herd?  She is showing me a black horse?  friend or foe?  Maybe Ma or Shirley can get a bit more but she feels so baby here, a new pic may well manifest more for us.

I don't think her problem is emotional either.........It's from discomfort.  I think it's from her reproductive area and not digestive.  Has she been flushed?

No she foaled with no trouble, placenta was intact ,as far as I could tell, Foal was weak from the first and she never came full into her milk.,  She  came into foal heat on day 8.  I didn't want to bred her until next spring so I have kept her separate from the boys.No sign of any  drainage either.hmmm

Cheryl,
I would have her flushed.  Just a tiny bit of infection can make them uncomfortable.  Actually, to be safe, EVERY mare needs to be flushed after foaling.
Hope she feels better.
Pam

P.S.  Our vet showed us how to flush a mare and left the stuff to do it with, will yours do that?
Pam

Pam,  Our vet does the same for us too!

Cheryl, you could always start her on SMZ's now, and then when she comes back into heat have her flushed....... This may be a great time to also ask your vet to teach you how to do it yourself!  It's really very easy to do.

Let me have another looksee...she feels alright just a bit sluggish.  A bit of something may help if there is infection but I (sorry gals) don't feel one.  Her tummy right upper is a bit ouchy, thus the carafate should help, if not then maybe the vet.  As for the black horse, yup that's the one.  BTW have you had her teeth checked?  I feel a wee sharp in left back not bad mind but maybe next year will need attending.  I would not offer her grain, pellets maybe ok but until her tum is better grass and hay will do her fine.

I will talk to my vet about getting the solution an d such and keeping it here to flush them with. I started her on SMZ just to cover bases and melted a Omeprezole in with them (one enough?) and gave them to her this morning. .  Now to watch her for a couple of days.  Sage does she like her boyfriend to be q5 ?  Thank You guys for the help,  q13  sometimes I can seem to communicate with these guys and sometimes its a blank wall.  Seems the harder I try the less I get. q23  .  Love and Blessings to you all   Cheryl

It's probably good to have all your bases covered with her: The front end (mouth), the middle (stomach), and her hind end.....so to speak.  q2

As for what you said about communicating with your little ones? You were RIGHT ON. The harder one tries, the less things happen.  That's why it's good to just relax your mind into a "zone"......like daydreaming. Your thoughts aren't really focused, so outside influences (such as your mare's thoughts and/or feelings) can enter in.

My suggestion would be to go out to her and begin to either rake her paddock or just give her a brushing. Ask her both out loud and mentally, "Can we talk?  How are you doing?".......Then proceed with your raking or brushing and allow your mind to wander and be open.....ZONE out with the repetitive task you are doing.

You may receive impressions or feelings that don't seem to be your own.  But you may also receive WORDS in your head.  And don't worry if you nothing happens at first.  Keep doing it when you are alone with an animal and I bet something will happen when you aren't "trying".

Well done and suggested Ma.  I usually take my time, a few days just saying Hi, I'm Sage, stroking and petting  talking to myself, then they get curious and pow pics ans words flow when the time is right.  All folks can do it!

Some of us know Flirt has had difficulties since she lost her foal.  Now she is in a fight for her life so please join me.  She is at the vet, they are doing all they can for her since yesterday.  Cheryl is so upset as you can imagine.   They feel it is an impaction...and are working hard.  Flirt is being so brave, no pain, they've helped that...you know how very strong we can be joined....let us try..thank you.
